The Planet is Dying
Everyone is currently focused on Copenhagen and wondering what the endless discussions and dithering will finally bring. We’ll know soon enough! But in the meantime, it can certainly get very confusing for the average person. Who is wrong? Who is right? The sceptics, the revisionists, the non-believers or the scientists? Some are calling it “climategate,” while others recognize climate change as scientific fact. Media coverage has been sometimes superficial, other times catastrophic, but always succumbs to sensationalism. The media seek to confuse.
But the most important truth seems to get lost in all the clamouring: our planet is dying. This is a fact we witness every single day. But as we very well know, big money meddles in everything and benefits from the pollution of OUR planet. The planet belongs to each and every citizen of the world, and we can’t let big money destroy it. There is one basic principle we should insist on: Polluters must pay. We need to take political action and demand that business and government act accordingly. It’s our collective responsibility.
As North Americans, we have a special responsibility. Our lifestyle is mortgaging the future of the rest of the world. The American way of life is not sustainable; it creates misery and poverty everywhere. We’ve lived at the expense of others long enough. The world we live in has its limits, and we can’t continue to consume at the present rate. Let’s make an effort for our planet. That’s our responsibility as citizens.
The struggle continues.
