Let us build on the CUPW tour in the Pacific Region to intensify our outreach about the dangers of deregulation
From May 4th to the 9th, five other NEB members and I travelled to the Pacific Region for the final instalment of the regional tour that began last January. Over five days, we met with nearly 2,000 members, visited more than 25 postal installations, and took part in public forums in Surrey, Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo. We began the tour with a membership meeting involving three locals from the Lower Mainland (Vancouver, Fraser Valley West and Royal City). Many thanks to the Pacific Region for organizing the tour.
What a wonderful odyssey it was! It is always a great pleasure for me to meet with members on the work floor to discuss their concerns. We also shared with them our vision of a public and universal postal service, a postal service focused on public service needs and on people rather than on making profits.
We also discussed the dangers associated with the strategic review of Canada Post announced by the Conservative government on April 21. We know that large corporations want all services to be deregulated, including the postal service.
Brothers and Sisters, we need to start talking with our families, our allies in the labour movement and all organizations that use the postal service. We need to tell them that the only way to maintain our universal public postal service is to unite and demand that it be maintained. It is our duty to build this unity.
